After reading all the flame wars on whether Android Wear was the greatest thing since sliced bread or the worst thing since un-sliced bread I decided to be conservative and opted for a first gen watch before dropping too much cash on the "newest-greatest". I'm not going to add to the already gigantic pile of Wear reviews, suffice to say I'mwolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-23479201961898603062014-08-07T08:27:00.004-04:002014-08-07T08:27:59.679-04:00LighTouch - Phase II
DESCRIPTION
LighTouch is the second iteration of a prototype I 'completed' about a year ago - LighTouch - Phase I . The premise is simple: a fully functional streaming radio/alarm clock that uses hand gestures as the sole interface and no physical contact with the device.
Playback, volume, and track changing are controlled by waving your hand above the device.

Like anyone getting started, I bought an Uno and three random shields just to play with (music shield, bluetooth, and ultrasonic range finder). To that end, I got each of them up and running in record time and got bored. So what was the next logical step? Right... figure out how many of these shields can I use wolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-56345944147659996422012-09-17T11:21:00.000-04:002013-04-07T22:59:32.747-04:00Project Gemini - Phase 1 - XBMC (complete)Backstory
If you're reading this post than you are probably where I was a couple of months ago. You wanted to jump on the bandwagon of the single board, SOC craze and ran out and bought a Beagleboard XM (rev C in this case). You did this not because you're a developer or a potential product manufacturer but you thought the idea of a 1Ghz computer that fits into the palm of yourwolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-87487901497360087812011-12-04T20:47:00.001-05:002012-07-05T16:48:55.622-04:00$15 (easy) Water DetectorPremise
After the slew of hurricanes and tropical storms that plagued the east coast this year, I think just about everyone became aware of 'flooding basement syndrome'. I certainly did. And, in accordance to Murphy's Law, the flooding MUST begin at 3am when you are soundly asleep in bed then continue to flood until you wake up the following morning to a brand new indoor pool. &wolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-13062352027462115562011-08-22T11:42:00.001-04:002011-08-22T11:48:03.233-04:00USB Webcam MicroscopeNot everthing I do is original. You see, I've had the same same Sony alarm clock since 1992. The damned thing still has a tape deck in it!! I never really gave it much thought because I only stared at the thing once a day for 3 seconds, and that was to turn it off. Nothing more to say really. I just wanted something that had a little more polish and looked very unobtrusive when stowed away.

What is BlueBell?
BlueBell is the evolution of one of the last, untapped pieces of technology in your household; the doorbell. Your doorbell is probably the only audible alert system heard throughout your entire house yet it is limited to a single sound and triggered by one physical button. BlueBell seeks to improve upon this antiquated technology by transforming your doorbell wolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-74142820719909743862011-02-21T11:22:00.000-05:002011-02-21T11:22:49.628-05:00Kitchen PC - Part IIThe first bout with a usable kitchen PC consisted of mounting an old Armada E500 laptop within a picture frame. It's primary purpose was to act as a digital photo frame, but I also tried to squeeze some music, video, and dashboard capability out of it. Needless to say, the 800mhz processor and 256mb ram had some difficulties accomplishing this task in a pretty, user-friendly desktop wolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-40536563194920904702011-01-13T11:26:00.001-05:002011-01-13T11:28:05.317-05:00Project VixenNot so much a how-to, just a record of this year's holiday accomplishment.

I've seen quite a few posts lately around hooking Google Street View up to exercise equipment of some sort. Most tend to use sensors to detect a passing rotation. I love the idea, but not enough to spend the time or money necessary to make it a reality. So I improvised.

Five years ago I had a 2003 Chevy Cavalier, and I was bound and determined to stuff a PC in it. The first incarnation was beautiful in function, not in form. I had a 7" in-dash motorized touchscreen LCD (that didn't quite fit in the console) and a Compaq E-42 mini PC (now being used in Project Musicbox) stuffed in the glove compartment (the door didn't shut, so the wolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-25649036950701463872010-07-02T19:27:00.003-04:002010-07-04T16:49:42.504-04:00How to get free SMS (on your work restricted phone)Backstory - I've had a work phone for years now, to the point where I don't have a personal cell. The company has an unlimited voice and data plan, but (smartly) no sms messaging. This comes at great frustration to my friends in that they wonder why I'm never privy to the plans they've already made. To which my response is constantly "I can't get texts!".
So then Google Voice wolfebainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18182983209661949434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2782137084133493858.post-72357597332898385542010-06-27T12:02:00.006-04:002011-11-21T16:55:48.662-05:00Project MusicBox - Portable, hidden, and wireless sound system

Backstory - I'm a recent homeowner and the one of the things I was most looking forward to in owning a house was, of course, geeking it out. After getting everything pretty well in order (you'll see in some other posts) I turned my attention to the back deck and yard. As such, I needed a quick replacement for control and a mouse was not a good option for the car. I had a spare USB keypad and used AutoHotkey to emulate a mouse (when the numlock's off) and a cellphone-type keyboard (when the numlock's on).
